Dear Latino Arts Supporter,
When well-established institutions fail to acknowledge or document the history and artistic expressions of an ethnic minority community, it is easy to overlook the value of their contributions. When I think about the enormous contributions of Mexican/Chicano/Native people, I wonder just how much has been lost to history. It has been my life’s work to ensure that at least some of that history is valued and preserved for future generations. As we celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Chicano Civil Rights Movement, Hecho en Colorado tells the story of one community’s rich contribution to the history of the state.
“La Raza”, or the people, is a term used by Mexicans and Chicanos to describe ourselves. As Mestizos, or mixed race people, Mexicans are an amalgamation of all the world’s races. We are partly the ancestors of the Native peoples who have lived and traveled in this region for thousands of years. Conversely, we are also descended from the Europeans who conquered them and appropriated their lands. Into this complicated colonial mix, we are the progeny of African slaves, indentured Asian laborers and Middle Eastern traders.
The Mexican/Chicano/Native people have been in this region from the very beginning of the modern history of Colorado. We have been an integral part of every aspect of Colorado’s history. While many of our people were not born in Colorado, by no means are we new to this region.
The artwork included in this show is part of the Abarca Family Collection, and will be part of the Mexican Heritage Museum / Museo de Herencia Mexicana to be housed in the future Latino Cultural Arts Center of Denver, Colorado.

Cuando las instituciones establecidas no reconocen o documentan la historia y las expresiones artísticas de grupos étnicos es fácil ignorar sus contribuciones. Cuando pienso en la enorme aportación de gente Nativa/Mexicana/Chicana me pregunto cuanta historia se ha perdido. Este ha sido el trabajo de mi vida, asegurarme que al menos un poco de historia sea valorada y preservada para futuras generaciones. Mientras celebramos el 50 aniversario del Movimiento Chicano de Derechos Civiles, la exposición Hecho en Colorado nos habla acerca del camino de una comunidad enérgica en la historia de Colorado.
'La Raza' es un término que usan los Mexicanos y Chicanos para describirse a sí mismos. Como mestizos o raza mezclada, los mexicanos son una unión de todas las etnias del mundo. Parcialmente somos de ancestros nativos quienes han vivido y viajado en esta región por miles de años. También somos descendientes de los europeos quienes conquistaron el continente y se apropiaron de sus tierras. Dentro de esta complicada historia, igual somos descendientes de los esclavos africanos, los trabajadores explotados asiáticos y los mercaderes del medio oriente.
La gente Nativa/Mexicana/Chicana han habitado esta región desde el inicio de la historia moderna de Colorado y mucho antes atrás. Hemos y seguimos siendo una parte integral de la historia de Colorado y la nación. Si bien es cierto que mucha de nuestra gente no ha nacido en Colorado, eso no significa que seamos nuevos en la región.
Las obras de arte incluidas en esta exhibición son parte de la colección de La Familia Abarca, y serán parte del Museo de Herencia Mexicana que será parte del Centro Cultural Latinoamericano en Denver, Colorado.
