Artist Call For Entry

About the LCAC

In January 2022, the LCAC will open the doors to Las Bodegas (warehouses), an integrated community arts program that elevates the artistic and intellectual contributions of Native, Mexican, Chicano and Latino artists to national and international levels. Las Bodegas will offer individual workshops and community-wide projects that engage the public as co-creators. Among those enacted in the community is Ofrendas: Offerings of Hope. We believe that without art and creative expression, we cannot imagine a world without injustice. We leverage ancestral knowledge with cross-sector partnerships to heal generational traumas while building healthier and more resilient communities.

About Ofrendas

The LCAC presents Ofrendas: Offerings of Hopes as a response to the losses experienced during COVID-19. Ofrendas consists of culturally authentic altar starter-kits that can be customized according to personal histories and customs. It draws upon traditions passed on for hundreds of years and the creative spirit of artists to activate the digital space in educational ways, while co-creating and sharing in a culture of learning and healing. The starter-kits will be coupled with virtual lectures and activities led by a community psychologist, a cultural historian and a baker.

The Call for Entry

The LCAC is looking for a 1-page application from Colorado based-artists who have an understanding of Día de los Muertos. Five selected artists will contribute an altar-piece that reflects their artistic discipline and aesthetic to be included in the “altar kits”. They will be responsible for creating 125 duplicate objects for each “altar kit”.

The application consists of a cover letter (including a 400-word description of your concept and a sketch), a portfolio of your work, and a budget outlining the cost per unit (make sure to include your time and labor) for 125 altar pieces. Examples can include papier-mâché butterflies, a candle holder, milagro, papel picado, etc.
