The Collection

The collection includes renowned Mexican and Mexican-American fine artists, photographers, and folk artists privately held by the Abarca Family and is the most extensive in the Rocky Mountain region. Luis and Martha Abarca began collecting in the 1970’s.  Since their passing, the collection was entrusted to the care of their daughter, Adrianna. The selection represents the day-to-day experiences and contemporary expressions of Mexicans on both sides of the U.S.-Mexican border. Contents include thousands of objects, books, and documents dating back to the 1900’s. Ongoing acquisitions ensure its relevance and comprehensiveness. Works have been loaned to local exhibitions in the Denver Metro Area including the Arvada Center for the Arts, the Emmanuel Gallery at Auraria Campus, the Museo de las Americas, and Republic Plaza. Numerous local artists have been supported by the Abarca Family over the past four decades.

The Mexican Heritage Museum will exhibit works of Mexican and Mexican American artists. A large component of the museum will include the Abarca Family Collection of Denver. The installations will be curated based on common thematic areas and will include multiple forms of visual art. The Latin American Museum will include opportunities for showcasing permanent and traveling exhibits of Latin American arts and culture.
